6 Natural ways to treat anxiety. Supplements and vitamins that can alleviate stress!

Anxiety is related to feelings of strong apprehension about life events that can cause mild to more serious symptoms like panic attacks, dizziness, pour sleep at night and more. Anxiety can also relate to physical symptoms like sweaty hands, dry throat, tingling and sore head. Mild anxiety can usually go away once the event causing it is over, but a chronic form needs to be treated usually also with the aid of a physician.

It might take few weeks to notice the benefits and it can be combined with other herbs like hops and lemon balms.

Valerian extract can be also helpful to reduce headaches, digestive problems, menopause symptoms and post exercise muscle pain and fatigue. Valerian should not be used with ethanol, barbiturates, or antihistamine drugs and also during pregnancy.

Ashwagandha is an ancient herb used in the Ayurvetic medicine to manage stress and also to promote overall health and wellness. It can be used to treat stress and anxiety, to lower blood sugar and to boost brain functions.

Animal studies have reported that it can also help to treat several types of cancer because withaferin, a compound present in the root can induce apoptosis which is a process in which the cancer cells are made into small membrane to be removed by the immune cells.

Other researches have also shown that Ashwagandha can improve general memory, attention and general task performance due to its antioxidant activity that protect nerve cells from damages. Its long terms effects are still unknown, it should not be taken by pregnant and breast feeding women.

People with autoimmune disease should consult a doctor before taking it and the herb extract might increase thyroid hormone levels in some individuals.

4. Rhodiola

Rhodiola can be found in some mountains regions of Asia and Europe; Its roots are defined adaptogens which means they can help the body to adapt to stress and it can also help to treat fatigue and depression. It has been used for centuries in Russia and Scandinavia, to cope with the cold climates and stressful life.

Some people use Rhodiola to increase physical performance and also to increase concentration and thinking. The root contains some different active ingredients and two in particular called salidroside and rosavin seems to be the more effective to relief stress and anxiety.

It is better to take it on an empty stomach and not before bad time. The recommended dose for optimal results is 400 to 600 mg in a single dose daily. The extract might give some side effects like dry mouth, dizziness and sleep problems although have not been frequently reported.

5. Lemon Balm

Lemon balm is a herb that comes from the same family as mint which has been traditionally used to improve mood and cognitive functions but it also with other beneficial properties. It is a good antioxidant, antiviral and antitumoral agent.

It can be consumed as a food supplement, tea extract or applied to the skin in balm or lotion. Lemon balm can also be useful to treat digestive problems and headaches. Numerous studies have shown that rosmarinic acid which is contained in the herbal extract, can increase the number of neurotransmitters in the brain reducing anxiety and other mood disorders.

Rosmarinic acid has been discovered to have strong antiviral properties against common cold, hepatitis B viruses, Covid and other rhino viruses types. Lemon balm is supposed to be used for short term, possible side effects might include, nausea, headache, vomiting, indigestion.

6. Kava Kava

Kava Kava is a herbal extract made from a plant found in some islands of the Pacific Ocean called “Piper Methysticum”.

Kava can be sold in tea, capsules liquid or powder form. Daily intakes should not be more than 250 mg. Studies have shown that Kava can be useful to treat women who are going trough menopause helping them to have a pleasant mood without causing addiction.

Kava should not be taken with alcohol to avoid unpleasant side effects like drowsiness, impaired reflexes and liver damage. The effects of Kava might be weaker with prolonged use. It might also cause yellowing of the hairs and some allergic skin reactions.

There are also other natural products that can treat stress and anxiety however, on my advice those mentioned above can be a good start point for people that are interested to  try natural remedies on the matter.

As I always recommend consult your physician before taking any of those herbal extract and also find out which one can be combined with other extracts to get more benefits. To obtain effective results it might take at least few weeks, as each natural therapy usually need and don’t forget that each supplements have different effects on  each singular person so you might not get the desired results.

  3. Anxiety sometimes can be dangerous, and I believe that this is what a lot of many people especially teens and young adults faces everyday. Everyone have their own form of anxiety.
